Habitat Coffee is in a parade of shops along the stretch of hipster cafés in the Upper Thomson neighbourhood. The menu offers a wider range of food compared to other cafés, such as truffle fries, eggs benedict, pasta and sandwiches. It is also reasonably-priced.
I came here for brunch during the December school holidays with my teammates after training at MacRitchie Reservoir. Habitat Coffee has a self-service system so you have to make your orders and payment at the counter but they’ll serve the food to you. However, during my visit, the café was not full but the food took very long to arrive.
These churros had a bite to them and they were chewy too – just the way a churro should be! All the churros were evenly coated with cinnamon sugar and of the right thickness.
We also ordered Hello Truffle ($8), home seasoned truffle fries dressed with fine grated parmesan. As you can see in the header picture, the parmesan was barely visible. The fries were decent but nothing to shout about.
I found this to be an average-tasting dish. Moreover, the eggs were inconsistent with one of the eggs being runny, and the other overcooked. The taste of the sundried tomato in the bread was not distinct and it did not complement the ham and eggs. The hollandaise sauce was creamy and not too tangy. The bacon was also cooked perfectly – but then again, it’s quite hard to mess up when frying bacon.
The Big Ben ($14)
Scrambled eggs & honey baked ham on english fluff, 100gm chicken cheese sausage, grilled tomato and mini potato pancakes
When you’re at a loss for what to eat, you go for the big breakfast! This was a huge portion and very worth the price. The mini potato pancakes, a fancy term for hashbrowns, were fried perfectly. I did not try anything else but my friend commented that it was good.
All in all, Habitat Coffee has a cosy ambience but its premises are small so it is best to go at off-peak hours for the best experience. Although the food here is not anything spectacular, I can see myself coming back for its hearty comfort food if I am in the area.
