Food Review: GRUB

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/12b/76159940/files/2015/01/img_1884-1.jpg Grub is located right smack in the middle of Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park. Despite its out-of-the-way location, it can gather a legion of burger-loving fans, even on weekdays. So we spent about half an hour searching for Grub in Bishan Park, walking around aimlessly, looking for a white building in the midst of all the lush greenery. In the end, we found out we were 2.3km away from our destination. After walking another kilometer, we were tired and starving so we took the bus to Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, where we found out both parks were separated by a road. Grub is a warm and cosy cafe that greets you, plenty of dark wood with red brick walls. The ambience is great and the staff are very friendly as well. The crowd is mostly young adults, families and a couple of office people. Burgers make up most of the cafe’s menu, no doubt marking its specialty here. An added bonus is that everything is reasonably priced. The waiting time for the food is quite short too.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/12b/76159940/files/2015/01/img_1900-1.jpg Churros ($9)

Dark chocolate, tangy creme anglaise

One of the main attractions here is the churros. The churros are crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle and crusted with a decent layer of cinnamon sugar. They were definitely better than average and not dense like some of the ones I’ve tried. In my opinion, Habitat Coffee’s rendition is still the best. On the down side, the sauces were watery and not thick at all. It might be due to the fact that the cafe was closing in about an hour. I’ll give it another try next time.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/12b/76159940/files/2015/01/img_1901-1.jpg Mentaiko Fries ($9)

Mentaiko aioli, nori seaweed

Another favourite here is the mentaiko fries. It’s a mountain of perfectly golden crisp fries drizzled with creamy, flavourful mentaiko sauce and a generous sprinkle of nori seaweed. They even give you more mentaiko sauce on the side – not that we’re complaining!

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/12b/76159940/files/2015/01/img_1899-1.jpg/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/12b/76159940/files/2015/01/img_1896-1.jpg GRUB Cheeseburger ($13)

100% freshly minced beef patty, Monterey Jack cheese

A classic combo made up of beef, lettuce, tomato and cheese. The patty is made up of grass-fed beef which was juicy and tender. The cheese is melted and the buns are soft and have a bit of sweetness that brings the dish together.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/12b/76159940/files/2015/01/img_1898-1.jpg Crispy Fish Burger ($14)

Crumbled fish fillet, remoulade

I love how the fish is bigger than the buns. The fish was crunchy outside and the fish was flaky and well-cooked inside. It was on the dry side but the tartar sauce made up for it. You can even dip the burger into the mentaiko sauce for best results.

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/12b/76159940/files/2015/01/img_1897-1.jpg Pork Steak Burger ($13)

Sous vide glazed pork, grilled pineapple

The pork was a bit hard and tough for my liking. Perhaps it had been sitting out for too long before we took a bite. It’s not too bad; the sauce was refreshing. However, Grub is still a good place to satisfying your burger cravings without burning a hole in your wallet. Also, who needs truffle fries when you can have mentaiko fries? I’m definitely coming back.

Food Review: Feedlot Steakhouse Bar & Grill

image

If you visit Tanglin Mall often, you can’t miss the huge Feedlot Steakhouse Bar & Grill signboard just opposite the road at Tanglin Post Office. My mum has always wanted to try this place, and thanks to an offer on Chope, we finally have a reason to eat here!

Feedlot Steakhouse has created an exclusive Lobster Mac & Cheese special for only $12++ when you make a reservation via the SoShiok website or the Chope app. Promotion ends this Saturday so quickly make your reservations here.

image
Lobster Mac & Cheese ($12)
Elbow pasta in rich, creamy lobster bisque & chunks of lobster meat, topped with cheese & lightly torched

If it smells nice, it’s bound to be good. The lobster bisque had a rich aroma and it definitely didn’t disappoint – it was very flavourful. However, there was only a layer of cheese on top so I would have liked it to be more cheesy but the dish was not bad overall. You get what you pay for, I guess.

image
Swiss Portobello Burger ($28)
Angus beef, bacon, emmenthal, portobello

I forgot to take an individual picture of my brother’s burger but the beef patty was cooked to a perfect medium-rare and it was so juicy. This was also the first time I liked eating tomatoes and all the flavours went well together. The oatmeal buns were soft and fluffy too. I dare say it’s the best burger I’ve tried so far!

image
Tenderloin Linguini ($25)
Char-grilled beef, roasted garlic, olive oil, chillies

The pasta was fragrant and cooked to al dente. Moreover, the beef was, again, perfectly done. The waiter said it was very spicy so you could ask for it to be less spicy if you can’t handle the heat – that’s what my dad did.

In summary, the lobster mac & cheese is nothing to shout about but I’d give it a try since it’s only $12 and come on, it’s lobster. Anyway, the best thing about this restaurant is their beef and I’d come back just for that.

Food Review: Roadhouse

image

Roadhouse is a modern American diner serving hearty American fare like burgers, sandwiches and grills. Their portions are also bigger than a general Singapore restaurant’s, which make up for the expensive price tag to their food. Regarding their interior, the ambiance is lovely and very cozy with its dim lighting. It gives off a casual vibe which makes this Roadhouse an ideal place for dates as well as family gatherings.

Roadhouse is my favourite place to go to satisfy my burger cravings. It’s not outstanding but it’s definitely above average and very good. Additionally, they have pretty good service, although it was quite hard to get the waiter’s attention at times and the wait for our food was a tad long. However, I made a special request for a candle to be lit on our burger as it was my friend’s birthday and they agreed!

image

We ordered some appetisers to share before our main course arrived.

image

image
Big Ass Onion Rings ($10)
with honey-mustard mayonnaise

Thick-sliced onion rings deep friend in a light and crispy batter, served with a dollop of honey mustard sauce. My friends thought it went well with the onion rings. On the other hand, I found the sauce to be too tangy for my liking. Personal preference, I guess.

image
Mac & Cheese ($5)

When we first saw this, we decided to order it because it was the least expensive item on the menu and also because we love anything that has to do with cheese. We expected a very small portion but we were pleasantly surprised when we were served a reasonable amount. The macaroni was cooked al dente – it was not too soft and not too hard. Furthermore, the cheese sauce was creamy and rich in flavour.

image
The Terminator Challenge ($58)
6 wagyu beef patties, 6 slices of cheese, streaky bacon, jalapenos, chillis, homemade sesame buns, coleslaw & fries

Are you game? If you can wolf down this 1kg burger within 20 minutes all by yourself, you get the burger for free and your picture on the Wall of Fame (4 pillars and counting). One guy completed the challenge in slightly more than 6 minutes. What!!?!!?!!

Anyways, the wagyu beef patty was satisfyingly thick and we shared 6 of it among the five of us. We asked for it to be medium-rare and it was perfectly done. On top of that, the patty was exceptionally juicy and jam-packed with flavour. The fries were a bit on the dry side but they were acceptable. This sinfully good burger is definitely worth the calories.

In summary, it’s all about good food and good company here at Roadhouse and I don’t mind making a short trip here just for my burger fix. Did I mention Dempsey has free parking? If only I had a car.
