Food Review: GRUB

Despite its out-of-the-way location, it can gather a legion of burger-loving fans, even on weekdays. So we spent about half an hour searching for Grub in Bishan Park, walking around aimlessly, looking for a white building in the midst of all the lush greenery. In the end, we found out we were 2.3km away from our destination. After walking another kilometer, we were tired and starving so we took the bus to Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, where we found out both parks were separated by a road. Grub is a warm and cosy cafe that greets you, plenty of dark wood with red brick walls. The ambience is great and the staff are very friendly as well. The crowd is mostly young adults, families and a couple of office people. Burgers make up most of the cafe’s menu, no doubt marking its specialty here. An added bonus is that everything is reasonably priced. The waiting time for the food is quite short too.

Dark chocolate, tangy creme anglaise

One of the main attractions here is the churros. The churros are crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle and crusted with a decent layer of cinnamon sugar. They were definitely better than average and not dense like some of the ones I’ve tried. In my opinion, Habitat Coffee’s rendition is still the best. On the down side, the sauces were watery and not thick at all. It might be due to the fact that the cafe was closing in about an hour. I’ll give it another try next time.

Mentaiko aioli, nori seaweed

Another favourite here is the mentaiko fries. It’s a mountain of perfectly golden crisp fries drizzled with creamy, flavourful mentaiko sauce and a generous sprinkle of nori seaweed. They even give you more mentaiko sauce on the side – not that we’re complaining!

100% freshly minced beef patty, Monterey Jack cheese

A classic combo made up of beef, lettuce, tomato and cheese. The patty is made up of grass-fed beef which was juicy and tender. The cheese is melted and the buns are soft and have a bit of sweetness that brings the dish together.

Crumbled fish fillet, remoulade

I love how the fish is bigger than the buns. The fish was crunchy outside and the fish was flaky and well-cooked inside. It was on the dry side but the tartar sauce made up for it. You can even dip the burger into the mentaiko sauce for best results.

Sous vide glazed pork, grilled pineapple

The pork was a bit hard and tough for my liking. Perhaps it had been sitting out for too long before we took a bite. It’s not too bad; the sauce was refreshing. However, Grub is still a good place to satisfying your burger cravings without burning a hole in your wallet. Also, who needs truffle fries when you can have mentaiko fries? I’m definitely coming back.

Food Review: Hifumi Japanese Restaurant

What makes Hifumi so special is that you get access to an all-you-can-eat appetizer bar with any main course ordered. Currently, they’re having a weekday lunch promotion of a main course inclusive of the free flow appetizers with prices from only $9.99 to $11.99.

The things worth mentioning are chawanmushi, which was smooth and silky, tofu donuts and cha soba. The sweet potato fries are not bad too. The broccoli and corn was undercooked.

Omelette Curry ($9.99 – Promotion Price U.P. $12.99)

This was a really delectable and comforting dish. The curry was thick and rich. The bits of cheese could be mixed in and it complemented the curry rice. The omelette was cooked to perfection – the texture very fluffy and light.

We were the first customers here at the Marina Square branch so the service was pretty great. We stayed until around lunch hour when the crowd started coming in and it was total chaos. People had to queue for the appetizers spread. Honestly, I would only come again during the non-peak hours.

Food Review: Gyoza-Ya

Now this is what I call a true hidden gem. Located at the basement of Robinsons Orchard, Gyoza Ya specialises in gyoza, with most of its (limited) menu consisting of different varieties of gyoza, from pan-fried to boiled, and pork to crab fillings.

It’s cheap too as prices are under $10. However, they are still subject to GST and service charge. Additionally, regarding their service, there was lots of manpower but the wait for our food was excruciatingly long. The worst part is that there were only two other tables occupied and somehow, they still managed to mess up our order.

Pan-Fried Dumpling with Pork ($4.80)

Nevertheless, what the service lacked, the food made up for it. Each gyoza is made-to-order instead of using frozen ones. Talk about dedication. Without a doubt, these gyozas could possibly be the best in town. They were pan-fried to a light crisp on top. The skin is soft and thin. The pork fillings were juicy as well as flavourful and they were quite generous in the amount of fillings in each gyoza. Additionally, each gyoza is bigger than the gyozas at most Japanese restaurants.

Ninniku Yaki Meshi (Japanese Garlic Fried Rice) ($5.80)

This fried rice tasted excellent. It wasn’t oily and was very fragrant. The portion could be considered slightly small, but I felt that it was quite alright for me.

Overall, I’d say this place is definitely value-for-money and the food is pretty good. At least now I know where to go to satisfy my gyoza cravings.
