Food Review: Hifumi Japanese Restaurant

What makes Hifumi so special is that you get access to an all-you-can-eat appetizer bar with any main course ordered. Currently, they’re having a weekday lunch promotion of a main course inclusive of the free flow appetizers with prices from only $9.99 to $11.99.

The things worth mentioning are chawanmushi, which was smooth and silky, tofu donuts and cha soba. The sweet potato fries are not bad too. The broccoli and corn was undercooked.

Omelette Curry ($9.99 – Promotion Price U.P. $12.99)

This was a really delectable and comforting dish. The curry was thick and rich. The bits of cheese could be mixed in and it complemented the curry rice. The omelette was cooked to perfection – the texture very fluffy and light.

We were the first customers here at the Marina Square branch so the service was pretty great. We stayed until around lunch hour when the crowd started coming in and it was total chaos. People had to queue for the appetizers spread. Honestly, I would only come again during the non-peak hours.

Food Review: Peperoni Pizzeria

IMG_0273.JPG

I like big things. I certainly like big pizzas. In this case, bigger is definitely better. Peperoni is best known for their XXL family sized pizzas which are simply 21-inch pizzas that can feed a group of 5 comfortably.

We ordered half Frutti di Mare (prawns, clams, scallops, squid rings, fish & garlic) and half Hawaiana (pineapple, pork ham & bell peppers). They were very generous with the toppings you can see from the picture – heaps of ham and lots of seafood. My personal favourite is the seafood pizza because it’s bursting with flavour because of the garlic and I love how the squid is perfectly cooked. Next, the bell peppers also went really well with the Hawaiian pizza and the pineapples gave it a tangy sweetness. The crust was soft in the inner part and crispy in its outer rim, just the way an Italian pizza should be.

The best thing about Peperoni is that all prices are nett. No GST or service charge! Additionally, their service is excellent and the staff were all very friendly.

At Peperoni, all we knead is love. And pizza – definitely pizza. I’d say that Peperoni Pizzeria is the place to go for a pizza party.

Food Review: Kith Café, Park Mall

image

Headed down to Kith for a catch-up session with my best friend – we arrived at around 10.30am on a Friday and it wasn’t crowded at all. Kith Cafe has a really nice ambiance and it’s the perfect place to just chill because it’s really peaceful and quiet.

We decided to dine in the al-fresco area and it was a windy day so it was actually quite cool and comfortable to sit outside.

image
Latte ($4)

The latte is quite small and my friend said that it wasn’t very good. Moreover, given the price, I wouldn’t recommend getting it.

image
Strawberry Smoothie ($8.50)
Fresh fruit, Vanilla Yoghurt, Milk, Ice, Honey

This was delicious and refreshing. It was thick and creamy as well.

image
2pc Toast ($5) + Smoked Bratwurst ($3.50) + Scrambled Eggs ($4) + Smoked Salmon ($4.50)

There’s a few choices for what kind of bread you’d like for the toast and I chose Multigrain. The bread was fluffy and really plain without any spread haha. I really loved the smoked bratwurst. The scrambled eggs were a bit milky but smooth and creamy. They were good! The smoked salmon was not bad too.

image
Gorgonzola ($18)
Penne, Gorgonzola, Cream, Baby Spinach, Parmesan Cheese

The penne was cooked to al dente. The sauce was very thick and on the cheesy side but it was nice for the first ten minutes I guess. If you’re a pasta and cheese lover, you can order this.

In short, Kith Cafe is a great cafe to hang out although it’s a bit pricy. I’d say it serves hearty, comforting foods and for the price, their portions are worth it. This is a cafe I wouldn’t mind visiting again. I heard their pizzas are good too!

Food Review: Feedlot Steakhouse Bar & Grill

image

If you visit Tanglin Mall often, you can’t miss the huge Feedlot Steakhouse Bar & Grill signboard just opposite the road at Tanglin Post Office. My mum has always wanted to try this place, and thanks to an offer on Chope, we finally have a reason to eat here!

Feedlot Steakhouse has created an exclusive Lobster Mac & Cheese special for only $12++ when you make a reservation via the SoShiok website or the Chope app. Promotion ends this Saturday so quickly make your reservations here.

image
Lobster Mac & Cheese ($12)
Elbow pasta in rich, creamy lobster bisque & chunks of lobster meat, topped with cheese & lightly torched

If it smells nice, it’s bound to be good. The lobster bisque had a rich aroma and it definitely didn’t disappoint – it was very flavourful. However, there was only a layer of cheese on top so I would have liked it to be more cheesy but the dish was not bad overall. You get what you pay for, I guess.

image
Swiss Portobello Burger ($28)
Angus beef, bacon, emmenthal, portobello

I forgot to take an individual picture of my brother’s burger but the beef patty was cooked to a perfect medium-rare and it was so juicy. This was also the first time I liked eating tomatoes and all the flavours went well together. The oatmeal buns were soft and fluffy too. I dare say it’s the best burger I’ve tried so far!

image
Tenderloin Linguini ($25)
Char-grilled beef, roasted garlic, olive oil, chillies

The pasta was fragrant and cooked to al dente. Moreover, the beef was, again, perfectly done. The waiter said it was very spicy so you could ask for it to be less spicy if you can’t handle the heat – that’s what my dad did.

In summary, the lobster mac & cheese is nothing to shout about but I’d give it a try since it’s only $12 and come on, it’s lobster. Anyway, the best thing about this restaurant is their beef and I’d come back just for that.

Food Review: Assembly Coffee

image

Assembly Coffee is sandwiched between Mr Prata and The Wine Company at Evans Lodge. Its premises are very small but attracts large crowds. There are few items on the food menu and its list of drinks seems to be more lengthy than the food menu.

I came here on a Saturday morning and I’m pretty sure there can’t be a worse time to visit a cafe. The tables were very close together so everyone was kind of squeezed. The cafe was also full of chatter and it just didn’t give off a cosy and chill vibe.

image
Iced Chocolate ($6)

To kick-start a series of letdowns, we were served a way-below average drink. We saw how they made this drink – they put a scoop of vanilla ice cream, filled half the cup with Meiji Milk, poured some chocolate sauce and lastly, sprinkled some chocolate powder on top. It was pretty pathetic, to say the least. I’d hate to give bad reviews but really, there’s no nicer way to put it and I feel that everyone should know about it. It’s also very overpriced and my friend commented that the ice cream tasted like the ones from the supermarket.

image Ham & Cheese Crossiant ($6.50)

This was so-so. It was one of the better dishes that we had ordered. The crossiant was decent and there was nothing special to it, although some people have raved about it.

image
B.E.T Sandwich ($13.50)
Streaky bacon, sunny-side egg, malted mature cheddar sandwich topped with argula

This was a delicious and heartwarming sandwich. However, on the downside, there was a lot of cheese and it got a bit jelat (singlish for when you have too much of something and get sick of it) at the end.

image
Salmon and Eggs ($15)
Atlantic smoked salmon, scrambled eggs, homemade cream cheese greek yoghurt served on toast

Hopefully they were just having a bad day, because this dish wasn’t that great either. The scrambled eggs were creamy and fluffy but tasteless. The rocket leaves provided the extra kick that the dish needed. On the other hand, the smoked salmon came in large, thick slices and was not overly seasoned.

image

image
Chocolate & Strawberries Waffle ($11.50)
Homemade chocolate sauce, fresh strawberries, topped with vanilla ice cream

This was the saving dish of the day. The waffles are a must-try at Assembly Coffee and I really recommend them as well. The waffles are crispy on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside. They didn’t become soft or soggy despite the ice cream placed on top. This is truly waffle heaven.

Overall, Assembly Coffee has a few hits and misses. Their staff are friendly and waffles to-die-for, but the rest of the food is average and their interior is way too small.

Will I return again? Not really, no. I think that it’s overpriced and it’s relatively inaccessible. Unless I’m nearby and I have a strong desire for waffles, I’d skip this cafe.
